]]> Mon Jun 22 2009 QE2's final farewell to Southampton 11 November 2008 http://cunardqueens.fotopic.net/c1611057.html The day arrived for the final departure of Queen Elizabeth 2 from Southampton after over 40 years’ famous and faithful service. It was a crisp sunny day, which enabled the old lady to look her best at her mooring at the Queen Elizabeth 2 terminal, from the vantage points of Hythe Pier and the Hythe Ferry. The most poignant moment (for this was Armistice Day) was when a Harrier jump-jet flew up Southampton Water, hovered over QE2, then turned and bowed to its fellow Falklands veteran before flying off. Her departure on her final voyage to Dubai, where she will become a luxury floating hotel, was not until the evening, when I joined Maid of Poole, working with Blue Funnel as one of the hundred plus vessels which surrounded QE2 throughout the evening. Still photography proved impossible, but a short video is available at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=s-RNm1TnHaA . The video quality is poor but it provides a glimpse of the impressive firework display opposite Mayflower Park and a last opportunity to hear that distinctive booming whistle in British waters. It was a bright, blustery morning as the Mersey Ferries flagship Royal Daffodil set off down river from Seacombe to greet the QE2 as she arrived in the Mersey after a short visit to Douglas in the Isle of Man first thing in the morning. We circled the QE2 several times as she moved up river, then I joined the hundreds back on the bank at Seacombe and we watched her berth at Princes Dock, Liverpool against that iconic Liverpool skyline. This will only last for another few months, until Queen Elizabeth 2 sails away in November to retirement in Dubai. Tuesday 22 April 2008 was the only scheduled meeting of all three Queens in UK waters, and Southampton was blessed with warm (if hazy) spring sunshine for this special occasion, which was also the 39th anniversary of QE2’s first voyage. We visited Madeira and three of the Canary Islands, not to mention A Coruna, Spain on the way out and Lisbon, Portugal on the return. These ports provided a variety of photographic opportunities. The ship remains as magnificent and timeless as ever, though the crew's ethos appears more Carnival-generic nowadays, rather than Cunard-specific. I was up at 5.45 am on May 10 when I first saw QM2 from our hotel room I ran down to the Town Quay, where the ship had begun to turn As she continues to rotate, she catches the morning sun The Hythe ferry crosses in front of Queen Mary 2 at Southampton Soon she reaches her berth at the QEII terminal First landfall was Vigo, Spain on 12 May I could not get far enough away to take in the whole ship in one shot! The forward section of QM2 at the Estacion Maritima in Vigo On 14 May we were in Barcelona Queen Mary 2 dockside in Barcelona The bow of Queen Mary 2 moored in Barcelona No doubting the unique identity of this ship! On 15 May we moored in the bay at Cannes, France. Our tender speeds towards the harbour A view of Queen Mary 2 from the shore at Cannes A flavour of the French Riviera! Despite the hardware gracing the Film Festival, we WERE the biggest yacht in the bay! Returning to the ship, we see the tender platforms On a later outing, we see the tenders loading in the harbour, with QM2 in the bay behind We return to the ship, anchored in the bay at Cannes The ship stands out against the mountains of Provence After a few days of dull weather, a perfect sunrise in Gibraltar on 19 May Another tender follows ours as we head for the harbour I head straight for the cable car and we start to climb Soon a panorama opens up of town and harbour Queen Mary 2 appears like a model in the vast Bay of Algeciras A close-up of Queen Mary 2 in the bay at Gibraltar A grandstand view of Rembrandt / Rotterdam, on its way home for preservation, we all hope No doubt that we are on the top of the Rock of Gibraltar! We return to Queen Mary 2 after a morning in Gibraltar Leaving the ship later in the day for another run ashore We are the last tender to return The platform awaits, whilst another tender is about to be lifted A tender is hoisted back into position on the deck On 20 May we arrive in the beautiful port of Lisbon The Ponte 25 de Abril is a magnificent structure Queen Mary 2 at the quayside in Lisbon In the afternoon we head down the River Tagus It is a tight fit under the Ponte 25 de Abril Sadly we leavwe the wonderful city of Lisbon behind us A final view of Lisbon, Portugal on the River Tagus On a sea day, a view of the bridge of QM2. Queen Elizabeth 2 had just completed her 2005 World Cruise, and Queen Mary 2 was providing a connection to New York for World Cruise passengers. ]]> Tue Apr 19 2005 Queen Mary 2 in Malaga, Spain 20-21 October 2004 http://cunardqueens.fotopic.net/c325840.html QM2 was due in Malaga from 8 am to 6 pm on Thursday 21 October. We were booked for a short holiday in the province, starting the previous day. We checked into our favourite Malaga seafront hotel for the night, so I would be well positioned for the ship's morning arrival. We reached our sea view room about 3 pm and confirmed it was ideally placed to view arrivals from the west and follow them right into port. Friday 29 October 2004: QM2 was due in Malaga from 8 am to 6 pm on Thursday 21 October. We were booked for a short holiday in the province, starting the previous day. We reached our sea view room about 3 pm and confirmed it was ideally placed to view arrivals from the west and follow them right into port.

But then what was emerging from the haze in the west? A cruise ship certainly, but on closer inspection, although it was still several miles away, IT WAS DEFINITELY QUEEN MARY 2!!!! QM2 is still several miles away as a pleasure boat passes nearby QM2 continues its approach to the port of Malaga: she must have missed her planned stopover at Cadiz today QM2 passes the Hotel Guadalmar in Malaga As the ship moves eastward, it is lit up by the afternoon sun from the west As QM2 approaches the port, the eastern coastline beyond Malaga comes into view The Guadalmar beach in Malaga with QM2 in the background The buildings of Malaga city are now clearly seen beyond the ship A small boat comes out from the port, bringing the pilot on board A wide angle view shows QM2 has almost reached the harbour QM2 approaches its mooring on the Dique de Levante Queen Mary 2 is moored in the port of Malaga The following morning I head for the Port of Malaga. My first picture is through the fence QM2 is over a kilometre away Ciudad de Valencia, Trasmediterranea’s ferry to Melilla, a Spanish enclave on the Moroccan coast, is also in port The other cruise ship in port is Costa Romantica My first shot of QM2 at the quayside in the morning sun Taxis hope for custom from cruise passengers I have reached the guarded security barrier and can go no further A Maersk Sealand container ship is moored at the new container terminal on the western side of the port It is time to leave QM2 in the port of Malaga on 21 October 2004 My final look at that magnificent 'transatlantico' bow!

On her return cruise through the Mediterranean, she called at the Spanish port of Malaga in Andalucia. It was a brilliant summer day and people gathered along both waterfronts and rode the Mersey Ferry to get a closer look. As we leave the Pier Head on the Royal Daffodil, the Royal Iris returns to QE2 The Cunard Building is the middle one of the Three Graces We sweep round for a closer view of QE2 Her classic lines are ageless Her graceful but razor-sharp bow, with Cunard flag flying Passengers and crew waved to us and we waved back The Liverpool skyline from Seacombe, with QE2 mid-channel The Three Graces, with the Anglican Cathedral in the distance on the right We ran past her elegantly rounded stern QE2 with the Three Graces, and the Royal Iris on the move again To the right of QE2's bow can be seen the circular shape of the Roman Catholic cathedral The bow of QE2 with the Liverpool Pier Head skyline behind A wide-angle river view, on a perfect day The sun has moved round for a classic shot from the other side We leave Woodside and head back towards Liverpool We pass QE2 starboard to starboard! Her bow gleams in the sunshine, with Red Ensign flying As we round her stern, the Liverpool skyline is bathed in sunlight In the distance, the massive Anglican cathedral and the converted riverside warehouses The Royal Iris is again alongside QE2 We arrive back to the Pier Head As we dock, we are told that Britannia, the first Cunard ship, was only three times the size of the Royal Iris The Cunard Building on the Pier Head From the other side of the Cunard building, I catch a final glimpse of QE2 on the Mersey
